Our January webinar reviewing how eight companies are using xAPI (xAPI) has had a lot of attention. In this blog series, we refresh your memory of what each company is up to.

tessello is a great example of a different kind of LMS powered by xAPI to bring in learning experiences from wherever they occur, whether that’s the internet, the workplace or somewhere else! If you’re interested in recording and sharing social and informal learning, this blog is for you!

Brightwave’s tessello ‘Total Learning System’ comprises of an LMS, a social learning tool, a coaching and curation tool, and a xAPI LRS. These work together to enable learners to record and share social learning experiences with one another.

The story starts, as most learning does, outside the LMS. A lot of us learn from the internet: websites like Stack Overflow, YouTube and Wikipedia; you’re learning right now! tessello’s bookmarklet allows learners to record the websites they visit and what they learn on those sites without having to go back to tessello. When they do log in, all of their experiences are recorded, waiting for them in their private record with the option to share key experiences with colleagues. Shared experiences can be discussed and interacted with.

tessello also includes a native mobile app for iOS and Android. The learner can use this app to take photos of an event, record a video of a talk or an audio reflection on an experience. These records are attached to statements and can be played back on the tessello website.

Brightwave could have developed all of these features without xAPI, but xAPI means all the data can be shared with other xAPI conformant tools, whether that’s pushing data out from tessello or bringing in data from other sources.

Unison, a public sector union in the UK, are using tessello to connect their activists across the country to share learning and best practices. tesello is proving very popular amongst activists, with 1,000 active learners choosing to use the platform by February 2015.

3M use tessello to teach product knowledge training across Europe. Not only do 3M employees use tessello, but 3M customers also feedback on products via tessello’s social features – all tracked with xAPI.

What social learning happens in your organization? How much of it gets shared? Get in touch if you’d like to discuss how you can start recording, sharing and even analysing social learning, or even drop Brightwave a line and ask for a demo.
