What is xAPI?

What are the benefits of using xAPI?
Many eLearning standards can only capture digital experiences. xAPI enables you to track experiences that happen in many different environments and systems. xAPI also has flexibility when it comes to the structure of “statements,” allowing you to track what’s most important to you.

What are the technical details?
There are two key elements within the specification: statements and the Learning Record Store (LRS). Statements dictate the format for specific learning activities and follow an “[actor] [verb] [object]” structure. The LRS is where xAPI statements are stored and its portion of the spec defines the communication method for sending, receiving and requesting data.

Accelerating the adoption of xAPI and cmi5
cmi5 will play a key role in modernizing learning and training programs for both government and industry. But tools are needed in order to validate content and systems. That’s where Rustici and cmi5 CATAPULT come in. See what’s being developed to help increase adoption rates for the standard.
Learn more about cmi5 CATAPULTWhat does Rustici Software have to do with this website?
Rustici Software is the company behind xAPI.com. We manage and maintain the resources on this website to help people learn about and get started with the standard. We do not own xAPI. The standard is currently managed by Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL). We were instrumental in the creation of xAPI via a BAA awarded by ADL, the result of which was Project Tin Can, now known as xAPI or the Experience API. We also offer products that help companies implement the specification and solve common problems that arise when doing so.
